Nigerian music star Chinedu Okoli, known as Flavour N’abania, recently shared that he doesn’t see himself as part of the Afrobeat genre. In an interview on the Afrobeats Podcast, Flavour explained that his music is a broader representation of African sounds, rather than being confined to Afrobeat.
He expressed that while he appreciates the global recognition of African music, he feels his contributions are often overshadowed by the focus on Afrobeat. Flavour emphasized that there’s a rich variety of African music beyond just Afrobeat, and he’s proud to be part of that larger movement.
Flavour pointed out that the media often limits the discussion to Afrobeat, ignoring other influential African genres. He cited artists like Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platinumz as examples of musicians who are also advancing African music on a global scale.
“I’m not an Afrobeat artist,” Flavour said. “What I do is African music. There are many artists contributing to the global music scene who aren’t categorized under Afrobeat. If we talked more about African music as a whole, my contributions would be more recognized.”
