Miss Universe Nigeria’s Mother Arrested in South Africa Over Residency Fraud
Authorities in South Africa have detained Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adeshina, over allegations of fraudulent residency.
According to Siya Qoza, spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs, investigators—assisted by the South African Police Service (SAPS)—apprehended Rungo on the morning of February 15, 2025, at a property in Cape Town.
Officials had revoked her South African documentation in September 2024 after determining it was obtained through fraudulent means. Despite this, she reportedly continued residing in the country, using her Mozambican passport. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of any further misrepresentation.
During the operation, authorities also discovered that Adeshina’s underage child was living with Rungo. Home Affairs is now coordinating with the Department of Social Development and the SAPS Child Protection Unit to ensure the child’s welfare.
Following her processing for illegal residency, Rungo will be handed over to SAPS, as she is also under investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
Home Affairs has assured that further updates will be provided as the case unfolds.
Rungo’s arrest reportedly followed sightings of Chidimma Adeshina at a restaurant in Cape Town earlier this week.
