Canadian superstar Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, has set a new record in music history as his global hit Blinding Lights becomes the first song ever to cross five billion streams on Spotify.
Spotify shared the news on its official Instagram page, and The Weeknd quickly reposted the milestone with fans—marking yet another achievement for a track that refuses to fade.
Released in November 2019 as part of his After Hours album rollout, Blinding Lights went on to dominate charts worldwide. It held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, spent an entire year in the chart’s Top 10—a feat never accomplished before—and was later crowned Billboard’s “Greatest Hot 100 Song of All Time” in 2021.

Adding to its legacy, the song recently topped Billboard’s list of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century (2000–2024), solidifying its place as a modern classic.
Reflecting on its success earlier this year when the track hit four billion streams, The Weeknd said:
“I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create, making its way to millions of people, let alone billions. I’m so grateful that this music evokes a feeling in listeners that keeps them coming back.”
With 28 tracks now in Spotify’s prestigious Billions Club, The Weeknd stands as one of the most-streamed artists of the decade—cementing Blinding Lights as not just a hit, but a cultural phenomenon.
