Nigerian crossdresser and social media personality Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, could face new criminal charges following allegations of corruption during his recent incarceration. Bobrisky had reportedly served a six-month sentence earlier this year for abusing the naira, but rumors suggest he may have enjoyed special privileges, including serving time in a private apartment rather than a standard prison facility.
These allegations sparked scrutiny from Nigerian authorities, particularly after activist VeryDarkMan shared footage where Bobrisky purportedly claimed he paid officials from both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to secure these privileges. Following this, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, launched an investigation led by Permanent Secretary Magdalena Ajani to determine whether Bobrisky’s claims had any basis.
The investigative panel found no substantial proof that Bobrisky served his time outside the Kirikiri Custodial Centre. However, it recommended that he be charged with defamation for potentially tarnishing the correctional service’s reputation. Additionally, the panel called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to look into whether any bribes were paid by Bobrisky, directly or through intermediaries, to EFCC or NCoS officials. If such claims are proven, Bobrisky may face charges related to corruption.
Several correctional officials were implicated in the case, with allegations of backdating transfer documents and other procedural violations. The panel recommended disciplinary actions for three officials, including former Controller of Corrections Ben Rabbi-Freeman and Deputy Controller Michael Anugwa. The panel also suggested that NCoS improve transparency and maintain weekly oversight on inmate transfers and welfare services.
