Brazil’s First Lady Sparks Controversy with Elon Musk Remark
At an event preceding the G20 summit, Brazil’s First Lady, Rosângela “Janja” da Silva, caused a stir with an unfiltered comment directed at billionaire Elon Musk. Speaking on a panel addressing the issue of disinformation, she reacted to a sudden noise by quipping, “I think it’s Elon Musk,” before adding, “I’m not afraid of you, f*** you, Elon Musk.”
A video of her remarks quickly circulated on X (formerly Twitter), prompting a response from Musk. “They are going to lose the next election,” he wrote, accompanied by laughing emojis.
Musk’s Complex Relationship with Brazil
Elon Musk’s ties to Brazil have been marked by controversy. Earlier this year, the country’s supreme court suspended X for 40 days as part of a crackdown on disinformation. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, known for his leftist policies, supported the suspension as a necessary step to combat false narratives.
In contrast, Musk has aligned himself with former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who remains a polarizing figure in Brazilian politics. Despite being disqualified from running for office after his conviction for undermining the electoral system, Bolsonaro has expressed intentions to campaign again in 2026.
Following the First Lady’s remarks, Bolsonaro shared a screenshot of the incident on social media, commenting, “We now have another diplomatic problem.”
The G20 Summit Amid Tensions
The controversy unfolds as global leaders prepare for the G20 summit, set to take place in Rio de Janeiro. With diplomatic tensions brewing and disinformation on the agenda, the event promises to spotlight the challenges of navigating political and social divides in Brazil and beyond.
