Nura Muhammad Mahe, grandson of former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari, has openly criticized how the late Muhammadu Buhari handled Shagari’s passing in 2018. In a statement released Wednesday, Mahe reflected on the contrast between Buhari’s actions and the recent state burial organized by President Bola Tinubu for Buhari himself.
He commended Tinubu’s decision to not only attend the burial personally but also to ensure a dignified ceremony backed by a national burial committee. Mahe described this as a meaningful gesture that reflects national unity and respect for leadership, regardless of politics.
Drawing comparisons, Mahe recalled that when Shagari passed away in December 2018, Buhari, despite being in the country, didn’t attend the funeral or give him a state burial. Instead, a delegation led by then Secretary to the Government, Boss Mustapha, was sent in his place—a move Mahe described as cold and lacking empathy.
He expressed disappointment that Shagari, Nigeria’s first elected Executive President, was not honored in a manner befitting his historical significance. “It’s painful,” he said, “especially given the perception that there was lingering political resentment between them.”
Mahe concluded by calling for a shift beyond politics when it comes to honoring past leaders, offering prayers for their souls and reminding Nigerians that their legacies—good or bad—remain part of the nation’s story.
