President Bola Tinubu has announced that the late Muhammadu Buhari will be laid to rest with full state honours in recognition of his legacy and service to the nation.
In a heartfelt statement released on Sunday, Tinubu paid tribute to his predecessor, who passed away at the age of 82 in London. The President described Buhari as a man of honour—“a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman”—whose life was shaped by duty and a deep commitment to Nigeria’s unity.
As part of the national mourning, Tinubu has directed that all flags be flown at half-mast across the country for seven days. He also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, solely to honour Buhari’s memory.
In his message, Tinubu extended condolences to Buhari’s wife, Aisha, their children, and the entire Buhari family. He also reached out to the people of Katsina State and Daura Emirate, praising their strength and connection to a leader who left a significant mark on Nigeria’s history.
Reflecting on Buhari’s life, Tinubu recalled his two eras of leadership—from his time as military head of state in the 1980s to his democratic return as president between 2015 and 2023. He noted Buhari’s focus on integrity, discipline, and public service, saying he always chose national interest over personal gain.
“His legacy of courage and sacrifice will remain with us,” Tinubu wrote. “We honour his service. We reflect on his journey. And we pray for his peaceful rest.”
Tinubu concluded with a prayer for Buhari’s soul and expressed hope that his example would continue to inspire Nigerians to lead with conviction and selflessness.
