The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ruled out Congo from participating in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following a disciplinary review.
The decision follows a formal complaint by the Equatorial Guinea Football Federation (FEGUIFUT), which revealed that Congo fielded an ineligible player, Mankou Nguembete Japhet Elo, during the qualifiers. The player participated in both legs of the matches, leading to Congo’s disqualification and a $10,000 fine against the Congolese Football Federation.
As a result of this ruling, Equatorial Guinea has been placed in Group D alongside defending champions Senegal and Sudan.
CHAN 2024, which highlights talents from domestic leagues across Africa, has been rescheduled to August 2025. Despite the change in dates, the tournament will still be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria are among the teams confirmed for the competition, promising thrilling matches ahead.
Here is the updated group stage draw:
Group A: Kenya, Morocco, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Zambia
Group B: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
Group C: Uganda, Niger Republic, Guinea, Wild Card 1, Wild Card 2
Group D: Senegal, Republic of Congo, Sudan, Nigeria
