The UEFA Champions League made its return this week with a bang, delivering goals, drama, and last-minute twists across Europe in the opening round of the new league phase.
At Anfield, Liverpool edged Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a pulsating contest. Andrew Robertson opened the scoring inside four minutes, with Mohamed Salah doubling the lead soon after. Atletico fought back—Marcos Llorente struck just before half-time and again late on—but Virgil van Dijk’s stoppage-time header gave Jurgen Klopp’s men all three points.
In Germany, Bayern Munich sent out a statement by beating Chelsea 3-1. An early own goal from Trevoh Chalobah put the hosts ahead before Harry Kane added two more, including a penalty. Cole Palmer gave Chelsea hope, but Bayern’s control ensured a comfortable win.
Elsewhere, Inter Milan claimed a 2-0 win away at Ajax, Marcus Thuram scoring either side of the break, while Paris Saint-Germain crushed Atalanta 4-0 at the Parc des Princes with goals from Marquinhos, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, and Sergio Ramos.
Slavia Prague and Bodo/Glimt played out a 2-2 draw, while Olympiakos were held to a goalless stalemate at home by Pafos.
Tuesday’s fixtures were just as wild. Juventus and Borussia Dortmund produced an eight-goal classic in Turin, finishing 4-4 after a chaotic second half. Real Madrid edged Marseille 2-1 thanks to two penalties from Kylian Mbappé, while Arsenal impressed in Bilbao, beating Athletic 2-0 through Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Benfica suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat to Qarabag, while Tottenham snatched a narrow 1-0 victory over Villarreal.
The action continues on Thursday with Manchester City hosting Napoli, Newcastle clashing with Barcelona, and Sporting Lisbon meeting Kairat Almaty.
