The ex-Chelsea midfielder coached the Blues from 2019-2021 as well.
Chelsea in the English Premier League appointed Frank Lampard as caretaker manager until the end of the 2022-23 season on Thursday.
“Chelsea FC has announced the appointment of Frank Lampard as Caretaker Manager until the end of the season,” the London club said in a statement.
“The move brings Frank back to Stamford Bridge, where he had a successful playing career, winning the Premier League three times and the UEFA Champions League in Munich.” He was the club’s manager for 84 games, including the FA Cup final.”
Lampard, a former Chelsea midfielder, was also the Blues’ coach from July 2019 to January 2021.
Between 2001 and 2014, the 44-year-old was a key member of Chelsea’s squad that won three English Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League, and a UEFA Europa League title.
Lampard also spent a year coaching Premier League club Everton. He started at Goodison Park in January 2022 but was let go in January of this year.
Chelsea fired English manager Graham Potter on Sunday after a string of poor league results. Potter had been in charge for seven months.
Mid-table Chelsea has 39 points in the Premier League, trailing city rival Arsenal, who has 72 points after 29 games.
Chelsea, on the other hand, advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals. Lampard’s team will face reigning champions Real Madrid in Spain on April 12 and in England on April 18.
