Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race on Sunday, fully endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to step up as the Democratic nominee.
In a joint statement, the Clintons commended Biden’s “extraordinary career of service” and expressed their support for Harris. “We are honored to endorse Kamala Harris and will do whatever we can to support her,” they stated, emphasizing the dangers they believe a second Trump term would pose. “Nothing has made us more worried for our country than the threat posed by a second Trump term. He has promised to be a dictator on day one,” they added.
Former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also lauded Biden’s decision, calling him “one of the most consequential Presidents in American history.” Pelosi highlighted Biden’s patriotism and leadership, expressing her “love and gratitude” for his service. “Biden is a patriotic American who has always put our country first. His legacy of vision, values, and leadership make him one of the most consequential Presidents in American history,” Pelosi said.
Additionally, Barack Obama praised Biden’s choice to step down, acknowledging it as a testament to Biden’s “love of country.” Obama noted the challenges ahead, describing the situation as “uncharted waters” but expressed confidence in the Democratic Party’s ability to find a strong nominee. “Biden had every right to run for reelection,” Obama said, lauding the 81-year-old’s record and calling him a “patriot of the highest order.” He added, “We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead. But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges.”
