Celtic have confirmed the signing of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year deal, bringing him back under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers—his former coach at Leicester City.
The move comes just a day after Iheanacho’s contract with Sevilla was mutually terminated, clearing the path for the 28-year-old to join the Scottish champions as a free agent.
Rodgers and Iheanacho enjoyed a successful spell together at Leicester, most memorably during the 2020/21 campaign when the forward scored 19 goals across all competitions, helping the Foxes lift the FA Cup for the first time in their history.
In a statement, Celtic expressed their excitement over the deal, which also includes an option to extend for an additional year. For many supporters, his arrival is a welcome boost after frustration over the club’s inability to secure a striker before the transfer deadline.
Iheanacho’s career has spanned some of Europe’s biggest stages—rising through the ranks at Manchester City, winning the League Cup in 2016, and going on to make more than 200 appearances for Leicester. His move to Sevilla in 2024 was followed by a loan spell at Middlesbrough, and now he’s set for a new chapter in Glasgow.
On the international stage, the forward has worn Nigeria’s colors 58 times, playing a vital role in the squad that reached the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2023.
