Gasperini and Lookman: Tension Lingers Despite Atalanta’s Big Win
Atalanta’s head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, has reminded Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman of the significant strides he has made since joining the club, particularly in terms of goal-scoring.
His comments come amid ongoing speculation about a rift between the two, which intensified following Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League exit. Lookman’s missed penalty in their home defeat to Club Brugge sparked frustration, and Gasperini’s remarks afterward were seen as disrespectful by the Super Eagles star.
Despite the tension, Lookman put in a standout performance in Atalanta’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Empoli, netting twice. Gasperini took the opportunity to acknowledge his contributions while emphasizing the importance of teamwork.
“Lookman has always been a great goal scorer, at least since he arrived here. He’s become an exceptional player, especially when he fully commits to the team,” Gasperini stated in his post-match press conference. “He says he feels connected to the fans, and I really appreciate that.”
Although Lookman avoided addressing whether the issues with his manager had been resolved, his actions on the pitch suggested the tension had not completely disappeared. After being substituted in the 73rd minute, he exchanged gestures with assistant coach Tullio Gritti but notably avoided Gasperini.
When asked about his relationship with the coach, Lookman chose not to answer directly, instead responding with a shrug and a cryptic, “Finished?”
Despite the behind-the-scenes friction, Atalanta’s dominant performance against Empoli was a much-needed boost following their recent disappointment. Lookman remained focused on the bigger picture, praising the team’s effort.
“It was a fantastic performance today. Everyone contributed, and we need to keep this energy going,” he told DAZN. “We approach every game with the same mindset, and today’s win is something we can build on for the matches ahead.”
