A Federal High Court in Kano has rescheduled its judgement on the Council Repeal Law 2024 to 2 pm on Thursday. Initially set for 12 pm today, the court announced the postponement before noon, according to Naija News.
The case centers around the recent actions of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who dethroned the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and dismantled the four newly established emirates—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—set up by his predecessor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Additionally, the new state law reinstated the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, as the 16th Emir, reversing his 2020 ousting by Ganduje.
Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba and a significant figure in the Kano emirate’s history, challenged the legality of this law. His lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), filed a motion to have the law declared invalid.
Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, who received the motion last Friday, has adjourned the case to Thursday for further consideration. The judge will also rule on a request for a stay of proceedings made by A.G. Wakil, representing the State Attorney General and Kano State Government, who are also parties to the lawsuit against Danagundi.
This case is pivotal, as its outcome will influence the future of the emirate dispute. The Kano State Police Command has called for public calm and patriotism as the court prepares to deliver its ruling.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, emphasized the commitment to protecting lives and property while warning against any attempts to incite violence.
“In collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, the command will strictly enforce the ban on public protests, processions, and unlawful gatherings imposed by the state government. Violators and their sponsors will face legal consequences. Adequate security personnel will be deployed to maintain law and order. The public is urged to cooperate with the security forces and provide actionable information to preserve peace and detect deviants. Non-state actors, including vigilantes and hunters, are advised to refrain from participating in security operations under any guise,” he stated.
