“I’d Still Be Making Music” — Davido Reflects on Life Without Fame
Afrobeats icon Davido recently gave fans a rare glimpse into what his life could’ve looked like if the spotlight hadn’t found him. In a heart-to-heart chat with Okay Africa, the singer opened up about his deep connection to music — a passion he says would’ve stayed with him, fame or not.
The father of four also spoke about something more valuable to him than wealth: the genuine love he receives from his fans. For Davido, that kind of support isn’t something money can buy. From packed arenas to die-hard fans traveling miles just to catch a glimpse of him live, he called that devotion “pure” and something he doesn’t take for granted.
“My life is pretty open,” he said with a smile, adding that he’s never been one to hide much.
Speaking on the rise of Afrobeats around the globe, Davido shared the weight of representing Nigerian music on an international stage. He recalled his move to the U.S. to study music and how he slowly introduced his sound to new audiences. From hustling club DJs in Atlanta to hearing his songs dominate local radio, the journey was far from smooth — but it was worth every step.
Taking a moment to reflect on the early days, Davido remembered releasing “Dami Duro” in 2011. If he could speak to his younger self now, he’d tell him to brace for a wild ride — one filled with both highs and tough lessons. Back then, he never imagined reaching the level of success he enjoys today.
When it comes to musical inspiration, Davido revealed that hip-hop played a big part in his childhood. But it wasn’t until his teenage years that Nigerian music truly captured his heart. Legends like D’banj, Don Jazzy, 2Baba, and P-Square helped shape the artist he is today.
From humble beginnings to international fame, Davido’s story is still unfolding — but one thing is clear: music is, and always will be, at the core of who he is.
