After a night of torrential rain, officials are still determining the extent of catastrophic floods in the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kinshasa’s governor, Gentiny Ngobila, is touring the city as the leaders of several towns tell the media how much money they have lost.
According to Alidor Tshibanda, the leader of the Mont-Ngafula municipality, more than 30 individuals passed away in that municipality alone.
As of lunchtime, the city as a whole had at least 34 dead, according to the UN-sponsored Radio Okapi. However, it is anticipated that more people may succumb in the ensuing hours.
According to a representative for the water corporation, National Road 1, which connects almost 12 million Kinshasa inhabitants to the nearest port, is half underwater and eroding and one-third of the capital is experiencing water shortages.
