Over the weekend, Cyclone Hidaya battered Tanzania, resulting in three fatalities and the rescue of over 100 individuals.
Despite losing momentum as it approached Tanzania’s shores, the cyclone unleashed heavy rainfall and strong winds across the country’s southern regions on Saturday.
Reports indicate that more than 20 sailors from Tanzania and Zanzibar were among those saved after their vessels drifted into Kenyan waters. Unfortunately, one sailor lost his life when massive waves struck his boat.
The remaining 80 individuals were rescued from Kilwa Island in Tanzania.
The cyclone triggered a major power outage across much of Tanzania on Saturday. Additionally, ferry services between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar were halted for safety precautions.
Images circulated on social media depicted severe damage to houses caused by the cyclone’s fierce winds and fallen trees.
In neighboring Kenya, authorities are on high alert following the widespread destruction caused by the cyclone in Tanzania.
