President Felix Tshisekedi has made significant changes in the leadership of the armed forces as the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to face challenges from rebel groups in the east.
Lieutenant General Jules Banza Mwilambue has been appointed as the new head of the general staff of the armed forces. The decision, formalized in a decree signed earlier this week, was announced on state television. He replaces General Christian Tshiwewe, who has now taken on the role of military adviser to the president.
In another key move, Major General Christian Ndaywel, previously in charge of military intelligence, has been named chief of staff of the land forces.
These changes come as the army intensifies efforts to push back the M23 rebel group in North Kivu province. The group, active since 2021 and reportedly backed by Rwanda, has taken control of several areas, forcing thousands to flee and creating a severe humanitarian crisis.
The situation has grown more critical in recent days, with the rebels advancing closer to Lubero, a major town, and Butembo, a vital commercial center.
Tensions between the DRC and Rwanda have further complicated matters. A planned peace summit between the two countries’ leaders was called off last weekend due to disagreements over the terms of a proposed peace agreement.
