Reports from Rwanda’s Ministry of Defence indicate that three soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) crossed the border overnight. One of them was fatally shot after firing at a military patrol, while the other two were apprehended. The statement revealed that the Congolese soldiers were armed with an assault rifle and carried sachets of cannabis. As of now, there has been no response from DR Congo.
Tensions between the two nations have reached a critical point, with mutual accusations of supporting rebel groups that pose threats to their respective stability. The Kinshasa government alleges that Rwanda supports the M23 Tutsi-led rebel group and engages in illicit mineral activities in eastern DR Congo. Conversely, Rwanda has persistently accused its neighbor of supporting Hutu rebels.
The recent border incident adds to the existing complexities in the relationship between Rwanda and DR Congo, highlighting the ongoing challenges and disputes between the two nations.
