Rena Wakama Joins Chicago Sky as Assistant Coach
D’Tigress head coach, Rena Wakama, has officially taken on a new challenge, stepping into the role of assistant coach for the Chicago Sky. The WNBA team confirmed her appointment on Tuesday, praising her strong background in coaching and player development.
Wakama will be working alongside head coach Tyler Marsh and assistants Courtney Paris and Tanisha Wright, forming a team focused on pushing the Sky to new heights.
“Rena brings a winning mentality and an incredible work ethic,” said Marsh. “Her leadership with Nigeria’s national team at the Olympics, along with her track record in player development, makes her a great addition to our program.”
Taking charge of D’Tigress in 2023, Wakama led them to a record-breaking fourth consecutive AfroBasket title. Under her guidance, the team made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing major wins against Australia and Canada before reaching the quarter-finals—the first African team, male or female, to achieve this milestone.
Recognizing her achievements, FIBA named Wakama the Best Coach following the tournament.
Excited about this new opportunity, she shared, “I’m grateful to Jeff and Tyler for trusting me with this role. Tyler has one of the sharpest minds in the game, and I’m eager to support his vision for the team. I look forward to working with this talented group and bringing an exciting brand of basketball to Chicago.”
The Chicago Sky is set to tip off their 2025 season on May 17 against the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
