Kate Henshaw Speaks Out: “What Has Democracy Really Done for Nigerians?”
Actress Kate Henshaw isn’t sugarcoating her thoughts on Nigeria’s political journey.
In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s special Democracy Day programme, the Nollywood star voiced her frustration over what she sees as the disconnect between the idea of democracy and the everyday struggles of Nigerians.
“We say we’ve had uninterrupted democracy, but what does that even mean for the average person?” she asked. “Where’s the impact? Where’s the change?”
Kate pointed to the harsh realities many Nigerians face—vanishing middle-class opportunities, crumbling infrastructure, rising poverty, a failing healthcare system, and a sense of insecurity that never seems to lift.
“Everything around us is falling apart,” she said, “and people are just trying to survive.”
Despite the bleak picture, Henshaw called on Nigerians not to give up. She stressed the importance of staying vocal, pushing for accountability, and continuing to demand the justice, fairness, and security the country desperately needs.
She also admitted she couldn’t bring herself to post the usual “Happy Democracy Day” message on social media this year.
“There was just nothing to say,” she confessed. “It feels like we’re celebrating something that hasn’t lived up to its name.”
Still, she hasn’t lost hope completely.
“I believe we can still build something real for our children,” she said. “Something they can be proud of—and something they can grow.”
