Ibadan has a new king. Former Oyo State governor Rashidi Ladoja has officially been crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The traditional rites began at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, where he received the symbolic Akoko leaf before moving to the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area for the formal coronation.
Dressed in regal attire, Oba Ladoja later took his seat at the historic Mapo Hall, where Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to present him with the staff of office.

His ascension follows the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who died on July 7, 2025.
The colourful ceremony drew crowds of residents and dignitaries, with the city alive in vibrant outfits, music, and cultural displays. Among the notable guests were the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; former Ogun governor Ibikunle Amosun; and the Chief Imam of Ibadan. Also present were former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and ex-Osun governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who came to pay homage to the new monarch.

Security was tight, with DSS operatives and Nigerian Army personnel stationed around Mapo Hall to ensure the event went smoothly.
The Olubadan throne remains one of Nigeria’s most respected, known for its unique and orderly succession system—a tradition that continues with Oba Ladoja’s coronation.
