Kylian Mbappe Suffers Broken Nose in Euro 2024 Match Against Austria
The French Football Federation (FFF) announced that Kylian Mbappe sustained a broken nose during the Euro 2024 game against Austria on Monday, June 17, 2024.
Mbappe, who was anticipated to spearhead France’s attack, was injured in the 85th minute when he collided with Kevin Danso’s shoulder while attempting to receive a free-kick from Antoine Griezmann. The impact left the 25-year-old striker with a bleeding nose, requiring several minutes of medical attention before he could stand again. Interestingly, just four minutes later, he was shown a yellow card for going down shortly after resuming play.
Coach Didier Deschamps substituted Mbappe in the 90th minute, bringing on veteran striker Olivier Giroud. France secured a 1-0 victory thanks to an own goal by Maximilian Wöber in the 38th minute.
Following the match, the FFF indicated that Mbappe might have to wear a face mask for the remainder of the tournament. However, they did not confirm whether the newly signed Real Madrid star would be fit to play in France’s next game against the Netherlands on June 21.
“He has returned to the base camp of the French team,” the FFF reported. “He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without immediate surgery.”
In the post-game press conference, coach Didier Deschamps expressed his concern: “We need to assess the situation, but it appears quite serious, which is very unfortunate for us. He didn’t come away from this lightly.”
Deschamps added, “I won’t speculate, but the French team is always stronger with Kylian. If the situation doesn’t improve, we will have to compete without him.”
So far in his international career, Kylian Mbappe has scored 47 goals in 80 appearances for France.
