France has launched an investigation after Israeli athletes received death threats via email, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office on Sunday.
The probe, reported by Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, will be conducted by France’s national anti-online hate agency. At this stage, investigators have not identified any connections to Iran or other foreign entities. There is also no link to the recent unauthorized release of Israeli athletes’ private information on social media.
On Thursday, Israel alerted France about possible threats from Iran-linked groups targeting Israeli athletes and visitors during the Paris Olympics.
To ensure safety, French police are providing 24/7 security for Israeli athletes both in the Athletes’ Village and during their travels to Olympic venues. France has launched an extensive security operation for the Games, which run from Friday until August 11, deploying around 18,000 troops alongside regular police forces.
