Funso Doherty, a former governorship candidate for the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State, has joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement on Monday, Doherty explained that his move to the PDP is driven by a desire to unify opposition efforts against the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has dominated Lagos politics since 1999.
Doherty criticized the APC’s approach to governance, calling it “exclusionary and extractive.” He pointed out the state’s deficiencies in essential services such as public water supply, affordable power, quality education, healthcare, mass housing, and efficient public transportation. He also expressed concern about the government’s handling of climate risks, particularly flooding.
Doherty believes that the PDP, with its extensive national reach and established structure, provides the best opportunity to challenge the APC’s long-standing control over Lagos State. He is committed to collaborating with others to foster inclusive governance and drive people-focused progress in the state.
In his statement, Doherty said: “After thorough consultations, I am excited to announce my transition to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with high hopes for Lagos State’s future.
“This decision comes from our belief that Lagos needs a credible alternative to the current governance model, which has been exclusionary and extractive since 1999.
“Despite significant financial investments over the years, Lagos still lacks essential services, including public water, reliable power, quality education, and effective healthcare. The government’s approach also poses serious risks related to climate issues like flooding. It’s time to stand against the current leadership that perpetuates an unacceptable status quo.
“Our aim is to deliver effective, inclusive, and accountable governance for Lagos. The PDP offers the best platform to challenge the current state of affairs with its national presence and institutional strength.
“With the right candidates, we can build a successful movement. This decision was made after considering many views and advice from supporters.
“I am thankful to everyone who contributed their thoughts. We acknowledge the challenges ahead, including internal party differences, but we are committed to finding solutions.
“I invite you to join us in creating a new era of inclusive governance and prosperity for Lagos State.”
