The G-60 group of opposition federal lawmakers has praised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for appointing 23 Local Government Council Caretaker Committee Chairmen. This appointment took place on Wednesday at the Government House in Port Harcourt under tight security.
Fubara’s decision followed the submission of the list of chairmen to the state House of Assembly, led by Speaker Victor Jumbo, just a day prior. These chairmen were appointed after successfully passing the Rivers State House of Assembly’s screening process.
The new appointments were necessary due to the expiration of the previous council chairmen’s tenure on June 17, 2024.
In a statement from Abuja, the G-60 group pointed out that the tenure of the previously elected council chairmen, who took office three years ago under Governor Nyesom Wike, had ended. They urged the newly sworn-in chairmen to address the grievances of Governor Fubara and the people of Rivers State, emphasizing that the citizens had suffered under the previous administration’s neglect and misconduct.
The G-60 caucus accused the former local government chairmen of colluding with ex-Governor Wike to commit wrongdoing and obstructing Fubara’s development efforts. They expressed hope that the new chairmen would support Fubara’s administration and the Rivers State House of Assembly in promoting peace, stability, and progress.
The statement read: “We congratulate Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the people of Rivers State on the swearing-in of 23 Local Government Council Caretaker Committee Chairmen after their successful screening by the Rivers State House of Assembly. These appointments fill the vacancies created by the expiration of the former council chairmen’s tenure on June 17, 2024.
“We urge the newly appointed Caretaker Committees to show unwavering loyalty and support to Governor Fubara and the Oko-Jumbo-led Rivers State House of Assembly. They should not follow the path of their predecessors, who sabotaged progress.
“We commend Governor Fubara for allowing the former chairmen to complete their tenures despite provocations, demonstrating maturity and leadership qualities rarely seen among governors, especially in contrast to his predecessor, who disregarded court injunctions and appointed caretaker committee chairmen early in his term.”
