President Bola Tinubu has applauded the establishment of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative spearheaded by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Tinubu described the alliance as a groundbreaking effort to combat hunger and poverty worldwide.
Speaking at the opening session of the 19th G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he praised the initiative as a vital step toward addressing one of the world’s most pressing issues.
“This bold initiative highlights Brazil’s leadership in tackling the critical challenges of hunger and poverty. The Alliance sends a message of global solidarity and offers a collaborative approach to addressing immediate needs while targeting the root causes,” Tinubu stated.
Nigeria’s Role in the Global Alliance
President Tinubu linked the alliance to Nigeria’s development priorities, emphasizing the country’s commitment to adopting global practices to boost economic growth. He highlighted Nigeria’s endorsement of the alliance as a significant step toward leveraging international cooperation to address domestic challenges.
“The Alliance aligns with Nigeria’s core development goals, including eradicating poverty and achieving zero hunger. By partnering with international stakeholders, we aim to incorporate innovative solutions and financial support to strengthen our efforts,” Tinubu said.
He added that Nigeria’s involvement underscores its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on poverty eradication and food security.
Push for United Nations Security Council Reform
President Tinubu also reiterated the need to reform the United Nations Security Council, calling for a structure that reflects global diversity. He advocated for Africa to have two permanent seats with equal rights and responsibilities, stating Nigeria’s readiness to represent the continent.
“The Security Council must expand to include more diverse representation. Africa deserves a stronger voice, and Nigeria stands prepared to serve in this capacity,” he emphasized.
G20 and the Global South
Tinubu commended the G20’s decision to admit the African Union as a permanent member, hailing it as a step toward inclusivity. He called for continued reform of global financial systems to address the inequalities faced by developing nations.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s advocacy for a global tax framework that ensures fairness for developing countries, particularly in the digital economy.
“The existing international tax system often disadvantages developing nations, causing revenue losses that hinder progress. A reformed, inclusive tax system is crucial for sustainable development,” Tinubu noted.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
Tinubu urged the G20 to champion reforms that bridge gaps between the Global North and South, emphasizing Nigeria’s dedication to contributing to a more equitable global system.
“Multilateral institutions must evolve to address disparities and promote sustainable development. Nigeria remains committed to active participation in shaping a fairer future and achieving the SDG 2030 targets,” he concluded.
