Germany has expressed disapproval over US President Donald Trump’s recent comments about taking control of the Panama Canal, which he made during his inaugural address as the 47th President of the United States.
In a Tuesday interview, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was asked about Trump’s statements regarding the canal and his interest in Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark. Baerbock emphasized to German broadcaster RBB that any threats aimed at NATO members or other nations are completely unacceptable.
Baerbock suggested that Germany should approach the situation with careful strategy. “It’s not about how President Trump presents his ideas, but rather, it’s important to understand the reasons behind them,” she said. “We need to focus on the motivations behind his statements, while also advocating for our own interests.”
Regarding the Panama Canal, Baerbock pointed to China’s significant investments in global infrastructure, including ports. Trump, in his speech, voiced concerns that China was effectively controlling the crucial trade route, which the US handed over to Panama in 1999.
“We didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama. And we’re taking it back,” Trump declared. He has previously hinted at regaining control over the canal, even suggesting the possibility of military action.
Baerbock made it clear that Germany is not under any illusions about Trump’s intentions during his second term. “The USA is one of our most important allies, and we will continue to work closely with them,” she said. “However, we are also strengthening our own strategic positioning on the global stage.”
