Gervonta Davis Enlists Notable Lawyer in Pursuit of Early Release.
Boxer Gervonta Davis has chosen to retain the services of attorney Alex Spiro, known for his representation of high-profile clients such as Meek Mill and 21 Savage, in his efforts to secure an early release from jail, according to the Baltimore Banner.
Davis’ attorney, Andrew Graham, filed a motion on Friday requesting the addition of Alex Spiro to his legal team. Spiro has previously represented 21 Savage in his fight against ICE custody and has also worked with Meek Mill, serving as special counsel for his criminal justice reform organization, REFORM Alliance. Additionally, Spiro has represented prominent figures like Elon Musk, Jay-Z, Megan Thee Stallion, Alec Baldwin, and Robert Kraft.
The boxing champion was sentenced to 90 days of house detention in May for his involvement in a hit-and-run incident in 2020 that resulted in injuries to four individuals, including a pregnant woman. Davis was taken into custody on June 1 and has since filed two motions in an attempt to secure his release from prison.
Despite Davis’ previous motions being denied by Baltimore Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy, his decision to seek the assistance of Alex Spiro suggests his determination to explore all possible avenues for an early release. It is worth noting that Davis had previously parted ways with his former attorney, Michael Tomko, who represented him during his initial custody.
Alex Spiro gained recognition in 2016 for successfully representing former NBA player Thabo Sefolosha, who was found not guilty of resisting arrest and subsequently filed a lawsuit against the NYPD for false arrest and excessive force.
Davis’ arrest occurred at a time when his boxing career was flourishing. In April, he secured his 29th victory, maintaining an undefeated record with 27 knockouts, after defeating Ryan Garcia in a highly anticipated match. Following the fight, Davis confidently referred to himself as “the face of boxing” in his interview with Showtime’s Jim Gray.
