Ghanaian music star Shatta Wale has been detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in connection with a tax investigation surrounding his purchase of a luxury car.
The development comes after his yellow Lamborghini was seized, with US authorities linking the vehicle to a criminal network allegedly run by Ghanaian citizen Nana Kwabena Amuah. Amuah is currently serving a seven-year sentence in the United States for defrauding several organisations through vendor impersonation scams.
Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah, reportedly turned himself in to EOCO on Wednesday. His management stressed that the matter strictly concerns tax obligations, firmly denying any ties between the artist and Amuah’s fraudulent activities.
According to Wale, he is only a “third-party owner” of the $150,000 car and had no knowledge of who originally shipped it into Ghana. Authorities have indicated that the Lamborghini may be returned to the US to aid in compensating Amuah’s victims.
Shatta Wale, one of Ghana’s most celebrated performers, rose to international fame after collaborating with Beyoncé on the 2019 track Already. His team has appealed to fans for calm, assuring them that his legal representatives are working with officials to resolve the situation.
The case forms part of a wider joint effort between Ghanaian and US agencies to clamp down on global fraud networks. Just earlier this month, three Ghanaians were extradited to the United States over a $100 million scam involving romance fraud and phishing schemes.
For now, fans await clarity as Shatta Wale navigates one of the most challenging moments of his career.
