Ghana’s Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum, has introduced a fresh set of uniforms for basic school students in a bid to enhance the image of public schools. The unveiling took place at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
Dr. Adutwum highlighted the significance of this initiative, emphasizing the rebranding of public schools by replacing the traditional brown and yellow uniforms with blue and white ones. He attributed this transformation to President Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision for Ghana.
Addressing critics who question his commitment to basic schools, Dr. Adutwum reiterated his dedication to their improvement. He envisions a future where parents actively seek enrollment for their children in public schools due to the high-quality education offered.
Responding to criticism from Dr. Clement Apaak, the deputy ranking member of the Education Committee in Parliament, Dr. Adutwum defended the uniform change, stating that it represents progress for public schools. However, Dr. Apaak criticized the move, arguing that resources should be allocated to addressing pressing issues like the distribution of textbooks and the lack of furniture in schools.
This uniform change marks the second alteration under the Akufo-Addo Administration, following the previous change in 2019 by former Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who currently serves as the Energy Minister.
