Grave robbers in western Mozambique took body parts from a dead albino man after digging through concrete used to reinforce the grave.
Albino body parts are highly sought after in the country for use in witchcraft.
According to police, the suspects are still at large following the incident in Tete province’s Moatize district.
The deceased, who was around 50 years old, was recently buried in a village on Malawi’s border.
In preparation for possible theft, his relatives had reinforced the grave with concrete.
Remane Madane, an albino rights activist, has condemned the robbery.
He claimed that the police had promised to do everything possible to apprehend the suspects.
“The cemetery is remote. It’s a long distance to get there, so going alone is risky; otherwise, a team might be involved,” he explained.
Albino people, who lack pigment in their skin and appear pale, are routinely killed in several African countries, including Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
