While on a three-nation tour of Africa, US Vice President Kamala Harris announced $100 million (£82 million) to support the fight against Islamist militants in West Africa.
The package will benefit the coastal countries of Ghana, Benin, Ivory Coast, and Togo.
The region has been faced with security threats from jihadists operating in the Sahel.
Vice President Harries recognized Ghana’s leadership role on the continent and stated that the United States was willing to invest more to promote economic growth.
She stated that her visit to Ghana was not motivated by China’s influence in Africa, but rather by a desire to strengthen bilateral ties with the country’s partners.
Her visit coincides with the recovery of African countries from the global pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine
President Nana Akufo Addo has expressed concern about Russian mercenaries in some West African countries, as well as the need for Africa to solve its own problems.
Ghana is dealing with an inflation rate of more than 50%.
The country’s finance minister has just finished talks with China about possible debt restructuring in order to qualify for an IMF program.
The US has indicated that it will assist Ghana in overcoming its economic challenges and will continue to advocate for debt relief for countries in need, including Ghana.
