Houston is looking to tighten its bond with Nigeria in a big way. Mayor John Whitmire has put forward a request for the Nigerian government to open a consulate in the city and start direct flights between Nigeria and Houston.
The message was delivered during a diplomatic visit by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), who met with Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum on behalf of the mayor.
Houston, known for having one of the largest Nigerian communities in the U.S., would greatly benefit from these developments. According to both parties, the presence of a consulate and the launch of direct flights would make travel easier, boost trade, and strengthen diplomatic and community ties.
NiDCOM’s media unit, through a statement by its Director of Media and Protocol, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, confirmed that the proposals were well received and that the Commission is fully on board with the ideas discussed.
The meeting was filled with optimism and forward-thinking, with both sides eager to explore deeper partnerships. Among the attendees were Ambassador Chigozie Obi, former Nigerian envoy to Liberia; Kunle “Kay” Elegbede, a key figure in Houston’s international community relations; and members of the mayor’s team.
One of the most touching moments came from a young intern, Yorke Sydney, who shared how inspired she was by Dabiri-Erewa’s career path—from journalism to public service.
The visit left a sense of excitement in the air and signaled a new chapter of collaboration between Houston and Nigeria.
