The University of Lagos recently celebrated a groundbreaking achievement as the Department of Mass Communication produced 18 first-class graduates—all women—for the first time in its 59-year history.
During the university’s 55th convocation, these outstanding students were applauded for their dedication and exceptional performance. The 18 graduates include Feranmi Abiola, Ahuruele Akani, Oyindamola Arikawe, Ifedayo Ayilaran, Demiladeogo Bankole, Olaide Bankole, Eniola Daramola, Faith Enang, Temiloluwa Igbinlade, Joy Imanah, Ifeoma Iwelunmor, Chelsea Jegede, Opeyemi Kareem, Eunice Obidi, Frances Odogu, Mofesola Olanrewaju, Funmilola Onabanjo, and Peace Onuoha.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, praised the students for their resilience and hard work, emphasizing the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
Among the graduates, Chelsea Jegede shared her inspiring story. A data analyst and founder of the Selfless Heart Foundation, she reflected on the challenges she faced and how faith and determination carried her through.
“The journey wasn’t easy, but every challenge was a chance to grow,” she said. “Balancing academics with running a business, an NGO, and other responsibilities was tough, but I relied on my faith and determination. I truly believe I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Peace Onuoha, a photographer and product manager, also shared her story of perseverance. Initially aspiring to study law, she embraced her journey in mass communication and set her sights on achieving a first-class degree.
“I promised myself that if I couldn’t study law, I’d still excel in Mass Communication,” Peace said. “Juggling school, two jobs, and a photography internship wasn’t easy, but I made it work. Even when the pressure was high, I managed my time wisely, leaned on God for strength, and never gave up. Graduating with a first-class is my proudest achievement.”
The accomplishments of these women not only highlight their individual efforts but also showcase the transformative power of hard work, determination, and faith.
