Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has opened up about her first reaction to the hit song “Dorobucci” — and surprisingly, she didn’t like it at all.
In a recent chat with NotJustOk, Tiwa revealed that when Don Jazzy first played the rough version of the song during her wedding trip to Dubai, she thought it sounded terrible.
“Don’t know if people know this, but ‘Dorobucci’—Don Jazzy played it in the hotel when we were in Dubai for my wedding,” she said with a laugh. “I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a crap song.”
The singer said her opinion completely changed when she returned to Nigeria and heard the final version in the studio.
“I got to the studio, and when I heard it, I was shocked. I was so angry at myself because the same thing had happened with Eminado — I didn’t like it at first either,” she recalled.
Tiwa admitted she was the last Mavin artist to record her verse because she wasn’t convinced the song would work.
“Everyone had already done their part, and I was just there like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’ I recorded my verse last,” she said.
Despite her doubts, “Dorobucci” became one of the biggest Afrobeats anthems of its time, dominating charts and dance floors across Africa. Tiwa praised Don Jazzy’s creative genius and how he always manages to turn simple ideas into hits.
“We all know what happened after. Don Jazzy just has that magic. I honestly thought it was for Reekado, Korede, or D’ija. I never imagined I’d be part of it,” she said, laughing. “It turned out to be phenomenal. So shout out to Don Jazzy — always!”
