Exciting news from the entertainment world! Actor Idris Elba is stepping behind the camera to direct a short film called “Dust to Dreams” set in Lagos, Nigeria. Teaming up with Nigerian filmmaker Mo Abudu, they’re all set to make magic happen.
This collaboration is made possible through Abudu’s film production company, EbonyLife Films, and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), under its Creative Africa Nexus (Canex) program.
“Dust to Dreams” delves into the intricate dynamics between a mother and her teenage daughter, especially as the daughter connects with her father for the very first time. Joining the cast is none other than British-Nigerian music sensation, Seal. And alongside him, we’ll see the talents of Nollywood stars Nse Ikpe-Etim, Eku Edewor, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, and Constance Olatunde, who captured hearts during her time on Nigerian Idol.
Behind the scenes, Mo Abudu takes on a dual role as both executive producer and producer, while Heidi Uys steps in as supervising producer. Temidayo Makanjuola, Inem King, and Vanessa Demme also contribute as co-producers, completing the dynamic team.
This project marks a significant milestone as the first major film resulting from a collaboration agreement inked in 2023 between Mo Abudu and Idris Elba. Their respective production companies, EbonyLife Media and Green Door Pictures, united forces through this visionary deal.
Reflecting on the partnership, Elba expressed his passion for using his platform to uplift others: “I’ve always believed in making a positive impact through my work. Partnering with Mo allows us to provide top-notch industry education to aspiring storytellers and amplify their authentic voices.”
Indeed, this partnership paves the way for a more inclusive and diverse media landscape, spotlighting the rich tapestry of African and Diaspora experiences on a global stage. It’s a promising step forward in championing diverse narratives and empowering future generations of creatives.
