Grammy-winning South African artist Tyla recently lauded Nigerian singer Tems for her significant impact on the music industry, particularly in providing opportunities for young African female artists to gain global recognition.
In an interview with Kiss Fresh, UK, Tyla expressed admiration for Tems’ exceptional talent and highlighted the privilege of collaborating with her on her debut album. Describing Tems as a force to reckon with, Tyla emphasized the doors she has opened for emerging African female artists.
Their collaboration resulted in “Number 1,” a song featured on Tyla’s debut album, released this month. Tyla described the track as a beautiful anthem celebrating women, crafted by women themselves.
Meanwhile, Nigerian media personality Daddy Freeze weighed in on Tyla’s Grammy win, asserting that she deserved the victory over Nigerian artists at the 66th Grammys. Despite the absence of Nigerian nominees like Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Davido, Asake, and Olamide, Tyla emerged triumphant in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category.
Addressing concerns raised by some Nigerian music fans about the legitimacy of Tyla’s win, Daddy Freeze defended the decision, citing the global appeal of her song “Water.” He acknowledged the significance of the Nigerian nominees’ songs but argued that “Water” had greater traction, particularly on platforms like TikTok.
Overall, Freeze affirmed that Tyla’s Grammy win was meritorious, reflecting the song’s broader reach and impact on a global scale.
