Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Apologizes for Remarks on Dr. Kwame Nkrumah
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has apologized for remarks perceived as critical of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President.
In his statement, Dr. Opoku Prempeh praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, asserting that no other president in Ghana’s history has contributed more to the country’s development. He cited initiatives such as the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy and significant infrastructural developments under Nana Addo’s administration, drawing parallels to Nkrumah’s transformative leadership.
Despite his intentions, Prempeh’s comments sparked backlash for seemingly downplaying Nkrumah’s contributions to Ghana’s independence and development. Recognizing the sensitivity of the issue and the deep respect many Ghanaians have for Nkrumah, Prempeh issued a public apology to clarify his stance and mend relations.
“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor. I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” Prempeh stated.
In his apology, Prempeh reiterated his respect for Nkrumah and acknowledged his pivotal role in Ghana’s history, aiming to address concerns and show reverence for the nation’s founding leaders.
