Mauritania’s President Ghazouani Re-Elected with Strong Majority
Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has secured re-election with a decisive 56.12% of the vote in the first round, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced on Monday.
Ghazouani’s victory places him significantly ahead of his main competitor, Biram Dah Abeid, an anti-slavery activist, who garnered 22.10% of the votes. Despite the clear results, Abeid has declared he will not recognize CENI’s outcome.
