Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has expressed frustration over the difficulties of traveling within Africa as a Nigerian citizen. In a recent interview, Dangote shared his concerns with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, highlighting the cumbersome visa requirements he faces.
Dangote revealed that he needs to apply for 35 different visas to travel across the continent. “I just spoke to President Kagame about this an hour ago,” Dangote said. “I don’t have the time to keep dropping my passport at various embassies for visas.”
He pointed out the disparity between his experience and that of the interviewer, Patrick, who likely wouldn’t need as many visas with a non-African passport. “It’s frustrating. If everyone were treated the same, it would be understandable, but that’s not the case. Patrick, for example, doesn’t need 35 visas,” Dangote remarked.
While he acknowledged existing visa-free travel zones like the one including Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, Dangote emphasized the need for broader adoption across Africa. He called on African leaders to take initiative, stating, “We Africans need to address this issue ourselves. Waiting for external forces to drive our development won’t work.”
Dangote’s comments underscore the challenges faced by African businesspeople and travelers, and highlight the need for greater unity and cooperation within the continent to facilitate easier movement and foster economic growth.
