Nigerian reggae dancehall singer, Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie, widely known as Patoranking, recently shared his journey through tough times before achieving stardom. This heartfelt revelation came as he accepted the role of UNDP Goodwill Africa Ambassador for Youth Innovation, Enterprise, and the SDGs during the launch of the Timbuktoo Fintech Hub in Lagos by the United Nations Development Programme.
Patoranking, an Afrobeat artist who grew up in the urban slum of Ebute Metta, Lagos, reminisced about his early struggles. He spoke about hawking on the streets of Lagos with his father to make ends meet, a reality that shaped his determination and resilience.
“I hawked on the streets of Lagos with my father,” Patoranking shared. “Many years ago, I used to sell on this street [Kings Way Road]. It was a bustling trading spot. Many years later, I am living the life I envisioned. Driving down this road brought back memories, and it was an emotional moment for me because I saw how far I’ve come.”
He encouraged the youth to leverage their talents for the betterment of their communities and Africa as a whole. “That’s why I collaborate with artists from Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, and more. Accepting the role of UNDP Goodwill Africa Ambassador for Youth Innovation, Enterprise, and the SDGs is significant. Today, I am not just an artist; I am a voice for many African youths who aspire to make Africa thrive for themselves and their communities.”
