With a new deal that would see his pay skyrocket, Alex Iwobi is expected to be rewarded for his stellar start to the season at Everton.
In the new contract, the midfielder’s weekly salary will rise from £70,000 to £100,000, according to reports.
The Nigerian struggled early in his Everton career, but after Frank Lampard became the new head coach, his performances significantly improved. Iwobi, 26, was converted to a center-midfielder by the former Chelsea manager, and the transformation has been incredibly effective thus far.
Along with summer additions Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye, Iwobi has established himself as a crucial part of Everton’s midfield, improving the team’s performance at Goodison Park.
The former Arsenal player’s current contract expires in just 18 months, so Everton supporters will be happy to see him sign a new one. Iwobi’s new contract is a “three-and-a-half-year pact,” which will keep him in Merseyside through 2026.
Iwobi has put in strong performances for Everton, but the Toffees are still in danger of being demoted from the Premier League. The 17th-placed Everton will be looking to avoid a repeat of last season’s scare as they are now just one point above the relegation zone.
Following the conclusion of the World Cup, the Toffees’ season will resume with a match against fellow struggling Wolves on Boxing Day. For Lampard’s team to widen the gap between themselves and the relegation zone, this game will be a must-win. Everton’s place in the rankings is mostly due to their goal-scoring struggles this season; they have only scored 11 goals in their first 15 games.
Lampard will be hoping that his new and improved contract will result in improved returns given that Iwobi only managed one goal.
