Over 120 individuals affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage experienced a positive transformation during the 40th birthday celebration of Ghana’s beloved actress, Jackie Appiah. To mark the occasion, she generously sponsored weeks of comprehensive vocational and technical skills training in various fields, such as catering, metal works, hairdressing, fashion designing, cosmetology, tie and dye production, and cake crafts for the victims. On December 6, 2023, a day after her birthday, the beneficiaries were honored with accredited certificates and complete start-up kits during a graduation ceremony held at the Mepe St. Kizito Displaced Camp in the North Tongu constituency.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for the constituency, lauded Jackie’s remarkable act of kindness and revealed that her “skills facilitators were selected from top institutions across the country.”
“This timely skills training and empowerment initiative by Jackie will greatly benefit numerous distressed dependents, including children and the elderly,” stated the lawmaker. “Through this compassionate gesture, Jackie Appiah is metaphorically teaching our VRA-induced flood victims how to fish instead of simply providing them with fish.” Ablakwa added that, deeply impressed by Jackie’s gesture and his unwavering love for his constituents, he provided financial support to the facilitators and apprentices as start-up capital.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, extended his support to the flood victims in the North Tongu constituency. During his visit, he generously donated a variety of food items to those affected. Additionally, Prof. Amartey took a commendable step by providing scholarships to some of the exceptionally talented victims, as shared by Ablakwa on his social media pages.
