A former Gambian interior minister has been charged with crimes against humanity and other offenses by Swiss prosecutors.
They accuse Ousman Sonko of being involved in, and failing to prevent, systematic attacks on Yahya Jammeh’s opponents.
The charges are valid from 2000 to 2016.
Mr. Sonko’s lawyer told the BBC that his client had committed no crimes and denied allegations of crimes against humanity in The Gambia at the time.
Mr. Sonko has been held in Swiss pre-trial detention for six years after fleeing The Gambia in 2016 to seek asylum in Europe.
