Jenni Hermoso’s Stance Leads to Player Protest Against Spanish Football Federation President
Tensions are rising in the Spanish football community as 81 players boldly announce their refusal to participate in Spain’s national team activities until the removal of Luis Rubiales from his position as president of the Spanish football federation. The dispute stems from an incident where Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent after Spain’s Women’s World Cup final victory over England in Sydney.
Despite mounting pressure for his resignation, Rubiales remains defiant and unwilling to step down. The Spanish government has initiated legal proceedings to suspend him, and FIFA has also initiated disciplinary measures against him.
Rubiales’ anticipated resignation during an extraordinary general assembly convened by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) did not materialize. He addressed the situation, stating, “I don’t deserve this manhunt,” and defended the kiss as a spontaneous, mutual, and consensual act. He questioned, “A consensual ‘peck’ is enough to get me out of here?”
However, players’ union Futpro released a statement including statements from Jenni Hermoso, who clarified that she never consented to the kiss and expressed her frustration at having her words questioned and manipulated.
This statement, supported by all 23 members of the recently victorious World Cup squad, declared their decision to boycott national team activities under the current leadership.
As the controversy escalates, the Spanish national team faces uncertainty ahead of their upcoming match against Sweden in the Nations League on September 22. Notably, Borja Iglesias, a player for Real Betis, also declared his refusal to play for the men’s national team as long as Rubiales remains in power.
In the midst of this turmoil, the Spanish government aims to hold Rubiales accountable through the Spanish court system. If found guilty of violating professional sports code, he could face suspension. FIFA is also investigating whether his actions breach Article 13 of their disciplinary code concerning offensive behavior and fair play. The outcome of these actions could reshape the leadership landscape in Spanish football.
