Nollywood star and producer Juliet Ibrahim recently shared why she prefers to release her latest films on YouTube rather than traditional streaming platforms. In an interview with TheCable Lifestyle at the Nigeria International Film and TV Summit in Lekki, Juliet explained that YouTube’s less stringent requirements make it an appealing choice.
Unlike platforms like Netflix or Prime Video, YouTube doesn’t demand specific equipment, editing standards, or crew qualifications, making it more accessible and cost-effective for filmmakers.
Juliet noted, “When you submit to platforms like Netflix or Prime, you need to meet their equipment and editing standards, which can be quite costly. That’s where the funding issue often comes into play.”
She also addressed the issue of piracy, acknowledging that while YouTube isn’t completely immune to it, it still offers significant advantages. “While piracy is a risk everywhere, YouTube provides a straightforward way to reach audiences without the high costs associated with traditional cinema or streaming services.”
Additionally, Juliet emphasized the importance of reaching international audiences. “Filmmakers need diverse income streams, and many people abroad want to watch our content but can’t access it through traditional cinemas. Platforms like YouTube or Showmax offer alternative ways to share our films with a global audience.”
Juliet’s approach highlights a strategic balance between budget constraints and the desire to connect with a broader viewership.
