PDP Brings Back Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary After Long Dispute
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has reinstated Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary, finally settling a leadership tussle that’s dragged on for weeks.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, confirmed the decision. He was joined by key party figures, including Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Damagum admitted that the move wasn’t simple. “It took a lot of back and forth, but at the end of the day, the majority of the party’s leadership stood behind it,” he said.
Anyanwu’s return follows months of courtroom battles and internal disagreements over who should hold the position, a role that had remained hotly debated within the party’s ranks.
In a related development, the PDP has put a hold on its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that was originally planned for June 30. According to Damagum, the party had procedural challenges involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and is choosing to hold an extended caucus session instead.
“Since INEC didn’t acknowledge our earlier communication, we’ve decided to convene a broader caucus meeting first. From there, we’ll move toward organizing a proper NEC,” Damagum explained.
He clarified that INEC requires official letters to be signed by both the National Chairman and National Secretary. A previous attempt to notify the commission with only his signature was rejected.
“We’re simply aligning with what the rules demand,” he added.
With Anyanwu back in office, party leaders hope this move will clear the path for more stability and stronger unity moving forward.
