The Warri Refining & Petrochemicals Company (WRPC), situated in Warri, Delta State, has resumed operations, processing 125,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), shared this update during a facility tour. Addressing attendees, Kyari remarked, “This plant is operational. While it’s not yet at full capacity, significant progress has been made. Many doubt such achievements are possible here, but this stands as proof.”
The team on the tour included Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
In a prior statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recognized the contributions of former President Muhammadu Buhari in initiating the overhaul of Nigeria’s refineries. Tinubu also expressed appreciation for the African Export-Import Bank’s support in financing this critical project.
President Tinubu commended Mele Kyari for his relentless efforts in achieving this milestone and emphasized the need to fast-track the restoration of the second Port Harcourt refinery, as well as those in Warri and Kaduna.
“These efforts are key to boosting local production and positioning Nigeria as a major energy hub,” the statement read. “By improving domestic refining capacity, the reliance on imported petroleum products will significantly decrease.”
The President reiterated his administration’s focus on rebuilding critical infrastructure and urged all stakeholders to prioritize integrity and accountability in serving the nation.
He also affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring energy security and economic growth, aligning with the broader goal of shared prosperity for all Nigerians.
