Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has spoken out in support of veteran colleague Ngozi Ezeonu following criticism over a viral video showing Ezeonu scolding aspiring actresses for their outfits during a movie audition.
The incident unfolded when two young women arrived at the audition wearing crop tops and leggings, prompting a stern reaction from Ezeonu, who deemed their attire inappropriate. The video sparked mixed reactions online, with some defending the actresses and others siding with the veteran star.
On Monday, Kate Henshaw addressed the controversy in a video shared on her Instagram page. She defended Ezeonu’s stance, emphasizing that auditions should be treated as formal interviews.
“Auditions are interviews for roles,” Henshaw stated. “You don’t just dress like you’re heading down the street to buy snacks.”
She also highlighted the professionalism of Nollywood’s pioneers, referencing industry icons such as Joke Silva, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), Ego Boyo, Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett, and the late Sam Loco Efe. Henshaw expressed frustration over the ease of entry into the industry, which she believes undermines its standards.
“If they don’t teach you at home, you’ll learn outside,” she said, addressing critics who argued that Ezeonu had no right to comment on the actresses’ clothing. “She has every right to set standards for her audition. If you don’t want to dress appropriately, stay home.”
Henshaw called for more respect and professionalism, urging aspiring actors to take the industry and themselves seriously. “Let’s respect ourselves and what we’re here to do,” she concluded.
